Melandri renews with Yamaha

Marco MelandriMarco Melandri has renewed the contract that ties him to Yamaha and the Italian will again ride the YZF-R1 machine in the 2012 FIM Superbike World Championship.

“Yes, next year I’ll still be here in Superbike” revealed the 28 year-old former 250 cc world champion in an interview published in Italian weekly magazine Motosprint. “After changing four bikes and four teams in the last four years I am very happy to be able to build something that will last rather than having to start over again every time.”

On the eve of the ninth round of the calendar this weekend at Silverstone, the Yamaha World Superbike Team has now confirmed its 2012 line-up, with Eugene Laverty already under contract for next season.

“Silverstone is a track that I adore and I really like the fast bits. It’s very long and difficult and I am sure that we’ll offer two great races to all Superbike fans. Brno was fantastic not only for everyone watching but also for us riders. The duel with Max was really exciting, I enjoyed it a lot. He’s an ‘oldie’ but he’s still a strong racer. And I’m sure that in the UK we’ll both have to deal with Carlos Checa again and maybe there’ll some other surprises.”

Kwikasfaki by Cabbie

Take one Kawasaki H2 750 motor, recently decommisioned from drag strip duty we might add, throw in a plenty of bling parts, for measure include one deliciously white powdercoated frame, and you’ve got one seriously trick bike that is sure to go “kwikasfaki” (295lbs, 135rwhp, 9.3 down the mile if you’re a numbers person). Oddly enough, that’s exactly what one member on the Custom Fighters forum, named cabbie, did (full build thread here), and ...

Video: Red Bull slows down MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso

andrea dovizioso

Red Bull must’ve recently invested in slow-motion cameras. First, the company showed us MotoGP racer Casey Stoner running through corners at 1,000 frames per second. Now, that expensive lens has been trained on Andrea Dovizioso.

The Honda rider describes his impression of a perfect lap, while footage of Dovizioso is slowed to a beautiful crawl. At 1,000 frames per second, Dovizioso and his MotoGP bike are quite literally shown at full tilt. The contact patch is tiny, but the action is excellent. Click past the jump for the clip.

Kenny Roberts On The Yamaha M1: "I Liked My 500 A Whole Lot Better"

One of the more interesting side entertainments at last weekend's Laguna Seca MotoGP round was the return of King Kenny Roberts, who did a couple of demonstration laps on both his 1980 YZR500 and on a specially prepared Yamaha YZF-M1 MotoGP bike. After the ride, he spoke to a small group of (mainly Italian) journalists about the experience of riding the two bikes, and the comparison between the two. Fortunately, the select group of journalists included Jensen Beeler, editor of the excellent motorcycle website Asphalt & Rubber, and Jensen was gracious enough to share the audio of Kenny Roberts talking about the bikes with MotoMatters.com.

Roberts' comments offer a fascinating insight into the difference between the bikes from 30 years ago and the bikes of today, and the difficulties that each bike presents. Back in the late seventies and early eighties, Roberts suggested, you could compensate for a failure in bike setup by over-riding the bike, pushing it to do things it didn't want to do and sliding the bike to compensate. Modern MotoGP machines - exacerbated by electronics and the Bridgestone tires - will go about as fast as physics allowed. The old 500cc two strokes would allow room for creativity, but the modern bikes reward only one thing: complete precision. Where previously, running wide at a corner could be compensated, now, the difference between success and failure is hitting your lines to within a few centimeters. Over-riding a modern MotoGP machine will get you precisely nowhere, and is likely to either make you radically slower or leave you rolling through the gravel traps.

Yamaha Racing Legends in 50th Anniversary Video

In what?s become an annual tradition, Yamaha Motor USA has released a new video featuring its MotoGP stars as they stopped by California for the U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca.

In the latest video, Yamaha factory riders Jorge Lorenzo, Ben Spies, and Monster Tech 3 satellite riders Colin Edwards and Cal Crutchlow are joined by Yamaha legends and champions Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, and Kenny Roberts.

We?d say more about what happens in the video, but it?s probably better to watch it for yourself, after the jump.
